Why do some scripts need a key?

Script authors add keys to slow free use, push ad pages, or cover hosting costs. The key is usually a short string you paste into a GUI after execute. It does not make the Steal An Egg script safer or less detectable—it only gates access. Why do no-key scripts stop working?
